Sapermeina, Manipur, May 15, 2026: In a moment that brought immense relief to the Church and communities across Northeast India, two abducted young Salesians were released safely after a tense 24-hour ordeal in Manipur. Their safe return has become a moving testimony of faith, solidarity, and the power of peace amid uncertainty.
Salesian brothers Panmei Aching Albert and Poji Küvisie Peter were abducted on the night of May 13 while travelling from Don Bosco Imphal to Don Bosco Maram, located nearly 20 kilometres away. The two young religious were finally released safely on the night of May 14, bringing joy and thanksgiving to the Salesian congregation and countless faithful who had been praying for their safety.
A Community United in Prayer
The news of the abduction had deeply shaken the Salesian community, especially during a period when Manipur continues to face social tensions and unrest. Yet throughout the crisis, priests, religious, lay faithful, and well-wishers united in prayer and solidarity.
In an official statement issued from the Salesian Provincial House in Dimapur, Provincial Fr. Joseph Pampackal expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to securing the brothers’ safe release. He acknowledged the combined efforts of civil society organisations, church leaders, community elders, police authorities, and many individuals who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a peaceful outcome.
“With hearts filled with gratitude to God, I am happy to inform you that our two Brothers, Cl. Pamei Aching Albert and Cl. Poji Kiivisie Peter, have been safely released from captivity,” Fr. Pampackal wrote. He also thanked God for His providential care and invoked the loving intercession of Mary Help of Christians.
A Witness to Reconciliation
One of the most touching aspects of the incident was the role played by members of the Kuki community, who reportedly ensured the safety of the two young Salesians during their captivity. Fr. Pampackal described this gesture as a powerful sign of reconciliation, compassion, and mutual respect amid difficult circumstances.
Their actions offered a reminder that even during times of division and fear, humanity and goodness continue to prevail. The Provincial especially praised the spirit of cooperation shown by various communities and individuals who chose peace over hostility.
The Salesian leader also expressed appreciation to the Vice Provincial, Provincial Economer, Provincial Secretary, and all Salesian communities for their constant support, coordination, and prayers throughout the ordeal.
Called to Be Peacemakers
Reflecting on the incident, Fr. Pampackal quoted the words of Christ: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9), along with St. Paul’s exhortation: “Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding” (Romans 14:19).
The safe release of the two brothers has now become more than just a moment of relief — it stands as a sign of hope for a wounded region longing for healing and reconciliation.
Amid challenges and uncertainty, the Salesian mission in Northeast India continues to shine through its commitment to faith, dialogue, service, and compassion. The joyful return of these young religious reminds the faithful that even in dark moments, prayer, unity, and goodwill can still open the path toward peace.
