Northeast Bishops Condemn Killing of Kuki Baptist Leaders, Call for Justice and Peace

May 14, 2026: The North East India Regional Bishops’ Council has strongly condemned the ambush on Kuki Baptist Church leaders along the Kangpokpi–Lamka Road in Manipur, describing the attack as a grave act of violence that has shocked the Christian community and the wider society.

In a condolence message issued on May 14, Archbishop John Moolachira, President of the council and Archbishop of Guwahati, expressed deep sorrow over the killings. He termed the incident a “cruel and painful act of violence” against devoted servants of God who had dedicated their lives to fostering peace, unity, and spiritual care among their people.

The bishops mourned the loss of the slain leaders and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Baptist Church, and the Kuki community. Prayers were also offered for the speedy recovery of those injured in the attack.

In its statement, the council noted that the victims were not only pastors and ministers but also “messengers of hope, peace, and reconciliation” in a region long affected by conflict and division. Their deaths, it said, have left a deep void in both the Church and society.

Condemning the killings in the strongest terms, the council asserted that the murder of unarmed pastors and Church workers can never be justified on political, ethnic, or ideological grounds, stressing that such violence undermines the dignity of human life and the fundamental values of humanity and fraternity.

The bishops appealed to the Government of India, the Government of Manipur, and law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is delivered and that adequate measures are taken to safeguard innocent lives in the region.

Reaffirming solidarity with the Baptist community, the council assured continued prayers for the grieving families, healing for the injured, and the restoration of peace and harmony across the Northeast.
