Rome, 26 April 2025 — In an unprecedented farewell, Pope Francis was laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, following a funeral Mass that drew leaders and faithful from across the globe.
Aerial views of the Vatican revealed a striking mosaic of colour: the dark attire of world leaders, the scarlet robes of 250 cardinals, the purple of 400 bishops, and the white vestments worn by 4,000 priests.
After the solemn ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica, the great bells tolled in mourning as Francis’ coffin was placed atop an open-topped popemobile. In a historic first for more than a century, the late Pope was not interred within the Vatican but at his chosen resting place, St. Mary Major.
The popemobile exited the Vatican through the Perugino Gate, near the Santa Marta guesthouse where Francis had lived, shunning the grandeur of the Apostolic Palace. As the procession made its way along the 5.5-kilometre route, an estimated 150,000 mourners lined the streets of Rome.
Crowds threw flowers towards the casket, waved farewell signs, and cried out, “Viva il Papa!” and “Ciao, Francesco,” as the cortege passed iconic landmarks, including the Colosseum. The emotional procession echoed the spirit of Francis’ 47 papal journeys around the world.
The private burial ceremony, conducted away from the public gaze, marked the end of a pontificate defined by humility, reform, and a profound connection with the people.
