August 28, 2025: St. Augustine of Hippo (354–430) was not born a saint—he was a seeker, a wanderer, and at times, a rebel against God. Yet his restless search for truth and happiness led him to a dramatic conversion, making him one of the Church’s greatest thinkers and saints. His Confessions, sermons, and letters continue to speak across centuries because they echo the struggles of every human heart. In our noisy, distracted, and uncertain world, Augustine’s words remain a compass pointing us back to God.
1. “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You, O Lord.” (Confessions, I, 1)
Augustine captures the deepest truth of human longing. We often run after achievements, possessions, and pleasures, yet still feel empty inside. His words remind us that no career milestone or material gain can satisfy the soul. The restlessness we feel is actually a longing for God. Only in Him do our hearts find peace.
2. “Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of faith is to see what you believe.” (Sermon 43, 1)
Augustine explains the mystery of trust in God. In today’s world, people want instant answers and visible proof, but faith asks us to walk even when the road is unclear. It is a steady confidence that God is working, even in silence. The gift of faith transforms uncertainty into hope. In the end, it leads us to a vision of God’s truth.
3. “Love and do what you will.” (Homily on 1 John 7, 8)
This is not a license for selfishness, but a call to let love guide every action. If our choices flow from genuine love for God and neighbour, they will naturally be good. Love becomes the measure of every decision—whether in family life, friendships, or work. In times of conflict, love prevents us from choosing bitterness. It makes us free to act with joy and integrity.
4. “God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.” (Sermon 169, 11, 13)
These words are deeply personal and healing. In a world where many feel unnoticed, Augustine reminds us that God’s love is intimate and undivided. His love for you is not diluted by His love for others—it is infinite and unique. This truth gives dignity to every person, no matter their struggles. Knowing this can bring comfort in loneliness and hope in despair.
5. “Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.” (Letter 188, to Proba)
Augustine calls us to balance trust and effort. Sometimes we expect prayer to change things without action, or we rely only on our work without God. He teaches us to hold both together in harmony. Prayer grounds us in humility, knowing we need God’s help. Work reflects our responsibility, showing our love in action. Together, they form a life of faithfulness.
6. “To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek Him the greatest adventure; to find Him the greatest human achievement.” (Sermons, 255)
Augustine describes faith as a journey of beauty and fulfilment. People often chase love stories, adventures, and accomplishments, but these are fleeting if God is missing. To know and love Him is life’s truest adventure. It brings joy that the world cannot take away. This “romance” with God transforms every moment into a sacred journey.
7. “You aspire to do great things? Begin with little ones.” (Sermon 340, 4)
Augustine reminds us that greatness is built on humility and small beginnings. In today’s fast-paced culture, we want instant success and recognition. But real growth requires patience and faithfulness in simple, daily acts. Loving others in small ways, showing kindness, and staying consistent matter more than grand gestures. God shapes us for greatness through these humble steps.
