Kerala, August 14, 2015: The Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC) observed 15 August as Constitution Rights Protection Day, highlighting concerns over the growing number of attacks on Christian missionaries and institutions across India.
According to the KRLCC, these incidents have generated widespread fear and anxiety among the community. The council expressed regret that government authorities, both directly and indirectly, appear to be supporting such acts. Allegations of religious conversion are frequently used as a pretext for the violence, they noted.
The decision to mark the day stems from the belief that the religious freedom and fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India are being repeatedly denied. In this context, the KRLCC called for collective action to reaffirm constitutional values.
As part of the observance, every parish was urged to hoist the national flag in the morning, followed by the reading and collective recitation of the Preamble to the Constitution. The KRLCC, in coordination with other social and community organisations, the Parish Service Committee, and the Basic Christian Communities (BCC) Central Committee, led the activities.
Community spokesperson Joseph Jude emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating that the event served as both a reminder and a reaffirmation of constitutional protections.
