CBCI President Urges Protection of Minorities Amidst Rising Attacks in Independence day message

New Delhi, August 14, 2025 – Marking the nation’s 79th Independence Day, the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, extended warm greetings to citizens and called for renewed commitment to freedom, equality, justice, and unity.

In his Independence Day message, Archbishop Thazhath described independence as a “cherished gift” whose value is magnified in times when democratic values are under strain. He stressed that true progress is only possible when every citizen enjoys freedom, equality, and justice in full measure.

Highlighting India’s cultural and religious diversity, the CBCI President underscored the Constitution’s vision as the foundation for lasting peace and development. He urged the Government and all political parties to uphold and protect the rights and values enshrined in the Constitution.

“In a nation where people of many faiths live together, the safety, dignity, and freedom of minorities are vital to our integrity as a people,” he said, adding that recent attacks on minorities by anti-social elements threaten national harmony and must be addressed urgently.

Archbishop Thazhath also reflected on the significant role Christians have played in both the freedom struggle and ongoing nation-building. He cited figures such as Accamma Cherian, Madhusudan Das, Joseph Baptista, and Amrit Kaur as examples of Christian leaders who contributed to India’s independence movement.

From freedom fighters to those dedicated to education, healthcare, social upliftment, and rural development, the Christian community, he noted, has consistently worked alongside fellow citizens to strengthen the nation’s fabric.

Concluding his message, Archbishop Thazhath prayed for a future where all citizens live without fear, and in freedom, dignity, and mutual respect. “May God bless India,” he said.
