Semmiyamangalam, 3 December 2025 — Vellore diocese celebrated its 73rd anniversary and the first year of Bishop Ambrose’s leadership with an environmental programme at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Semmiyamangalam, bringing together clergy and parishioners for a large-scale tree-planting initiative reflecting the Church’s call to ecological responsibility.
Fr. Rayappa Kasi, a well-known environmental advocate associated with Cardijn Community India and serving with the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, led the programme, joined by diocesan procurator Fr. Richard Perira and parish priest Fr. Daniel Sharma.
Reflecting the ecological teaching of Pope Francis, the event highlighted the message of Laudato Si’ on care for creation as an essential dimension of faith, and the urgency of Laudate Deum in translating ecological reflection into concrete action. The diocese reaffirmed its commitment to integral ecology, sustainability, and fostering environmental awareness within parishes and communities.
As part of the celebration, the parish community planted 1,500 saplings across the church grounds and surrounding areas, a significant effort intended to strengthen local biodiversity and reinforce long-term environmental stewardship. The initiative saw widespread participation from parishioners of all ages, turning the celebration into a moment of shared ecological responsibility.
The programme concluded with appreciation for all clergy, parishioners and volunteers who contributed to the success of the initiative, which stands as a visible expression of the diocese’s dedication to protecting the environment and promoting a sustainable future.
