Oct 14, 2026: Have you ever wondered why Catholic exorcists repeatedly recommend the Rosary as part of spiritual warfare? For them, it is not a magical formula or an object to ward off evil. It is a prayer centred on Jesus Christ, strengthened by meditation on His life and an appeal for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Fr Chad Ripperger, an American priest and exorcist, described the Rosary as “a phenomenally powerful weapon” during an interview on The Shawn Ryan Show. Explaining the spiritual practices followed by his religious community, he spoke about daily Rosary prayer alongside other prayers and sacramentals used in their ministry.
His words echo the well-known devotion of St. Padre Pio, to whom the expression “The Rosary is the weapon” is widely attributed. The message is simple: persevere in prayer and keep your life rooted in Christ.
One of the most striking accounts comes from Fr Gabriele Amorth, the late exorcist of the Diocese of Rome. In an article published in Echo of Mary, Queen of Peace in 2003, Amorth recounted that a fellow exorcist had heard the following words during an exorcism:
“Every Hail Mary is like a blow on my head. If Christians knew how powerful the Rosary was, it would be my end.” These words are an account attributed to an alleged demonic statement during an exorcism, not an independently verified declaration. Their significance in Amorth's discussion lies in the spiritual value he attached to the Rosary as both prayer and meditation centred on Christ.
St Louis-Marie de Montfort, in The Secret of the Rosary, warned that distractions and discouragement can make people abandon this devotion. He encouraged Catholics to persevere even when prayer feels difficult. His teaching reminds us that spiritual warfare also involves resisting temptation and remaining faithful in ordinary life.
Msgr Stephen Rossetti, an American exorcist, likewise discussed the Rosary in his Exorcist Diary entry, “The Rosary as an Exorcist's Weapon”, published on 24 October 2021. He recounted the story of St Bartolo Longo, whose devotion to the Rosary became part of his journey from spiritual distress to a life of faith. Rossetti also described how laypeople pray the Rosary during exorcism sessions.
You do not need to wait until you feel afraid or spiritually troubled to pray the Rosary. Begin with a decade, meditate on a mystery of Christ's life and return patiently to the prayer whenever your mind wanders.
The Rosary is not a substitute for the sacraments, sound spiritual guidance or appropriate medical care. It is an invitation to draw closer to Jesus, seek Mary's intercession and grow in faith.
The heart of spiritual warfare is not fear of evil, but fidelity to Christ. Take up your Rosary not out of panic, but out of love for the One whose victory over sin and death is the foundation of Christian hope.
