24 May 2025: In times of siege, suffering, and spiritual struggle, one name echoed through the cries of the faithful: Mary Help of Christians. Discover how this powerful devotion shaped victories, inspired popes, and anchored Don Bosco’s vision.
Victory Through the Rosary – The Battle of Lepanto
The devotion to Mary Help of Christians traces its roots back to 1571, when Catholic Europe united in prayer during a time of crisis. On 7th October of that year, the famed Battle of Lepanto took place. Through the power of the Rosary, the Christian fleet achieved a decisive victory over the Ottoman forces. In gratitude, Pope Pius V declared this date the Feast of the Holy Rosary in 1573, commemorating Mary’s intercession in safeguarding Christendom.
Vienna Besieged – A Cry for Help
In the late 17th century, Mary’s powerful aid was invoked again during the siege of Vienna. With 200,000 Ottoman Turks surrounding the city, Emperor Leopold I sought refuge in the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Pasau. Plans for the defence were drawn on 8th September, Our Lady’s Birthday. Victory came on 12th September, the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary, as Christians across Europe prayed, crying out “Mary, Help!” Once again, the Rosary became the weapon of the faithful.
The Pope’s Vow – Mary Honoured in Rome
During the Napoleonic era, Pope Pius VII was arrested and held in captivity for five years. In his suffering, he vowed to God that should he be restored to the papal throne, he would honour Mary with a special feast. His release came in 1814, and on 24th May of that year, he triumphantly returned to Rome. True to his promise, he established the Feast of Mary Help of Christians to be celebrated annually on the same date.
Don Bosco’s Dream – Anchoring the Church
Saint John Bosco (1815–1888), the founder of the Salesian Order, was known for his prophetic dreams. One significant dream, on 14th May 1862, revealed the Church as a ship under siege. In the vision, the Pope anchored the Church between two great pillars—one bearing the Eucharist, and the other a statue of Mary Help of Christians. This symbolic dream highlighted the central role of the Eucharist and Mary in guiding the Church through turbulent times.
A Mission Entrusted – Salesians and Their Devotion
Don Bosco envisioned his Salesian congregation with a clear mission: to promote devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary under the title Help of Christians. He believed this title brought joy to the Queen of Heaven. In 1868, he dedicated the mother church of his congregation in Turin to her, and the Salesian Fathers and Sisters have since spread this devotion across the globe.
The Salesian Sisters – Daughters of a Vision
The Salesian Sisters of St John Bosco, officially known as the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, continue the mission of Don Bosco. As the sister order of the Salesians of Don Bosco, they uphold the same commitment to education, service, and spreading devotion to Mary Help of Christians.
Mary Help of Christians remains a powerful symbol of intercession and strength—a guiding presence through the Church’s trials and triumphs across centuries.
