Kochi, August 27, 2026: The Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church has selected Santosh Karumathra of the Archdiocese of Trichur and Jacob Pynadath of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly for the Sabhatharam Award, recognising distinguished service to the Church and society.
The decision was taken during the second session of the 34th Synod of Bishops, which began at Mount St. Thomas, Kakkanad, on August 17.

The Synodal Committee for Conferring Titles and Honours examined nominations submitted by various eparchies and presented its recommendations to the Synod. Following an assessment of the nominees’ contributions and service, the bishops selected Karumathra and Pynadath for the honour.
The Sabhatharam Award recognises lay members of the Syro-Malabar Church who have made notable contributions to the Church and wider society in different fields.
The awards will be presented during the Dukrana-Sabhadinam celebrations at Mount St. Thomas, the Major Archiepiscopal Curia of the Syro-Malabar Church, on July 3, 2027.
