Stella Maris Elevated as 175th Parish of Goa and Daman

Goa, April 16, 2026 — In a moment of deep ecclesial significance for the local Church, Stella Maris Chapel in Miramar was formally elevated to the status of a parish, becoming the 175th parish of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman.

The historic occasion was marked by a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, drawing together clergy, religious, civic leaders, and a large gathering of the faithful. Among those in attendance were Fr. Romeo Monteiro, Chancellor; Fr. Francisco Dias, Dean of the Panjim Deanery; and Fr. Zeferino D’Souza, who assumes responsibility as the first Parochial Administrator of the newly erected parish.

In his homily, Cardinal Ferrão underscored the deeper meaning of a parish as a “living Church,” urging the faithful to nurture their spiritual lives through prayer and active participation in the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist. He called on the community to build bonds of fellowship grounded in love, mercy, and forgiveness, and to bear witness to Christ’s peace and compassion in their daily lives.

The elevation of Stella Maris marks the culmination of a steady journey of growth from its origins as a modest chapel under St Inez Parish into a vibrant and self-sustaining faith community. The formal decree of erection was read by Fr. Romeo Monteiro, followed by the signing of official documents by the Archbishop.

Reflecting on the milestone, Fr. Zeferino D’Souza described the elevation as the fruit of “years of unwavering faith and collective effort” by clergy, parishioners, and benefactors. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to Church authorities, former chaplains, parish councils, catechists, youth, and all who contributed to the development of the community.

Congratulating the faithful, Cardinal Ferrão encouraged them to look to the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title Stella Maris as a guiding light in their journey of faith. Fr. Edmund Antao also conveyed his best wishes, affirming the significance of the occasion for the wider Church.

As part of the celebrations, former chaplains were honoured with tokens of appreciation in recognition of their dedicated service. A commemorative coffee table book chronicling the history and milestones of the chapel was also released.

With its new status, Stella Maris Parish is envisioned as a centre of prayer, unity, and service, committed to nurturing faith and fostering Christian values among future generations.
