St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, Retains Goa University Inter-College Cycling Title

Goa, December 13, 2025: St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, has once again pedalled its way to the top by securing the Goa University Inter-College Cycling Championship for the second consecutive year, reaffirming its growing reputation for sporting excellence. Established in 2017 and offering only a Bachelor of Science (BSc) programme, the young institution has carved out a unique legacy by combining academic rigour with consistent success in sports.

From its inception, the college has promoted a holistic model of education. Despite being a specialised science college with a relatively small student strength, it has invested steadily in developing a strong sports culture. The cycling team’s rise reflects this vision. Before winning gold in the past two championships, the team had earned bronze medals in the two preceding years, demonstrating steady progress and sustained competitiveness.

Triumph on Two Wheels: The 2025 Victory

The 2025 championship highlighted the team’s dominance as well as individual brilliance. The college clinched the overall gold medal, while its cyclists also featured prominently in individual events. Final-year student Vignesh Naik secured an individual bronze medal, rounding off a collegiate career in which he contributed to podium finishes for three consecutive years. Second-year student Bhavesh Naik added to the success with an impressive individual silver medal, signalling a promising future for the team.

Beyond university-level competitions, students from the college have consistently qualified for national-level events, winning medals and underlining the quality of training and talent emerging from the institution.

A Supportive Ecosystem Behind the Success

College authorities describe the achievement as a collective effort driven by a supportive academic and sporting environment. Prof. Simao Diniz, Administrator of the college, ensures that students receive the necessary equipment, infrastructure, and encouragement to pursue academics and sports without compromise.

Officiating Principal Ms. Viona Correia provides constant motivation, while Mr. Infancio Correia, Instructor of Physical Education, oversees daily training, planning and discipline. The team also benefits from the mentorship of Mr. Deepak Ashanagar, whose dedicated coaching has played a key role in sharpening technique and team spirit.

The entire teaching and non-teaching staff contribute by offering flexible schedules and academic support, enabling student-athletes to excel both in laboratories and on the cycling circuit.

Academics and Athletics in Sync

The college points to its alumni as proof of its balanced approach. Former team members have progressed to reputed MSc programmes or secured industry positions, graduating with strong academic results. As St. Joseph Vaz College celebrates its second straight cycling title, it stands as a compelling example of how a young science college can nurture champions in sport and in life.
