Sister Heicelet, SD, Succumbs to Injuries After Road Accident

KOTHAMANGALAM, Kerala, July 1, 2026: Sister Heicelet, SD, a 56-year-old member of the St. Vincent Province of the Sisters of the Destitute, died on Wednesday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a road accident in Kothamangalam. She passed away at 5.45 a.m. while undergoing treatment at Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva.


According to the Sisters of the Destitute, Sister Heicelet was on her way to the Nirmala Centre for Educational, Spiritual and Theological Training (NESTT), the diocesan pastoral centre, where she was scheduled to conduct a class. During the journey, she reportedly fell from a moving private bus and suffered critical injuries. She was immediately taken to Rajagiri Hospital for emergency treatment but could not be saved.


A native of Rajapuram in Idukki district, Sister Heicelet was widely respected as a dedicated Malayalam teacher. She had previously served at Onnukal School, where colleagues, students and parishioners remembered her for her commitment to education, compassionate service and close involvement with the local community.

Sister Heicelet belonged to the St. Vincent Province, Kothamangalam, of the Sisters of the Destitute (SD), a religious congregation known for its ministries in education, healthcare and social outreach across India and abroad.


Her funeral will be held at 3.30 p.m. on July 2.


In a statement, the Sisters of the Destitute requested prayers for the eternal repose of Sister Heislet's soul and for strength and consolation for her family, fellow Sisters and all those grieving her untimely demise.
