Shimla, July 5, 2025: In response to the recent cloudbursts and flash floods that have ravaged several parts of Himachal Pradesh, Manav Vikas Samiti, the social work commission of the Simla-Chandigarh Diocese, along with Caritas India, has launched emergency relief operations in the worst-affected areas under the diocese's jurisdiction. This announcement was made in a press note issued on July 4 by Fr. Lenin, the Director of Manav Vikas Samiti. The coordinated effort aims to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to communities most affected by the disaster.
Since the onset of the monsoon on June 20, torrential rains have triggered severe flash floods, landslides, and large-scale destruction across the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh. The upper districts of Mandi, Kullu, and Shimla have been among the worst affected. Several villages in these districts have been cut off from their surrounding areas due to collapsed bridges and damaged roads. Residents in various areas are facing acute shortages of food, clean water, shelter, and medicines.
Relief teams from the diocese’s Manav Vikas Samiti are actively working on the ground across various regions of the state, conducting rapid assessments of the needs of affected communities. They are distributing emergency relief kits containing dry rations, hygiene supplies, tarpaulins, and basic medical aid. The teams are also coordinating closely with local authorities to ensure the safe evacuation and support of individuals stranded in isolated regions.
Beyond immediate relief, the initiative also includes plans for long-term rehabilitation, with a focus on restoring livelihoods and rebuilding damaged infrastructure. The diocese's response underscores its continued commitment to standing in solidarity with vulnerable communities during times of natural calamity.
Manav Vikas Samiti has appealed to the public and civil society for support and solidarity to help rebuild the lives of those affected by the disaster.
The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh until July 7, reinforcing the urgency of the relief efforts.
