Questions Every Catholic Should Ask Before Receiving the Eucharist

June 6, 2026: We say we believe Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. But if someone observed the way we prepare for Mass, receive Holy Communion, and live afterwards, would they see evidence of that belief?

1.If Jesus were visibly standing at the altar waiting for me, what would I do differently?

Would I still arrive rushed, distracted, or late? Would I dress with greater reverence and spend more time preparing my heart? Would I listen more attentively to the readings and be less concerned about my phone or the people around me? The truth is that Jesus is already waiting for me in the Eucharist. If my behaviour would change dramatically if I could see Him, perhaps I need to reflect on how deeply I believe He is truly present.

2.Has the Eucharist become familiar rather than extraordinary?

The greatest danger to faith is not always disbelief—it is routine. We can receive Holy Communion week after week and still lose our sense of wonder. Do I approach the altar with the same reverence I would show if Christ stood visibly before me? Or has the extraordinary gift of the Eucharist become something I simply expect?

3. Am I receiving Jesus while refusing to surrender something He is asking me to change?

Every Communion is an invitation to deeper conversion. Yet many of us hold tightly to habits, grudges, relationships, ambitions, or sins that we know God is asking us to surrender. I receive Christ into my heart, but am I allowing Him access to every part of my life? What area of my life am I still telling God, "You can have everything except this"?

4.What am I really doing after receiving the Eucharist?

The moments after Communion are among the most intimate we have with Christ. Yet it is possible to mechanically recite prayers while never truly opening our hearts. After receiving Jesus, do I pause to listen to Him? Am I willing to let Him challenge me, comfort me, correct me, or call me to something greater?

5.Would my family say that the Eucharist has changed me?

At every Mass, Christ gives Himself completely. The Eucharist is not merely food for the journey; it is a model for Christian living. Jesus breaks Himself for others, pours Himself out for others, and loves without counting the cost. Am I doing the same? Or do I leave Mass unchanged, still focused primarily on my own comfort, preferences, and needs?

6.Would Jesus recognise Himself in me?

This may be the most difficult question of all. After years of receiving Holy Communion, have I become more like Christ? Am I growing in mercy, humility, purity, generosity, and love? The goal of the Eucharist is not simply that we receive Jesus, but that the world encounters Jesus through us. If Christ looked at my life today, how much of Himself would He see reflected there?

The goal of the Eucharist is not simply to bring Christ into our lives for a few moments, but to allow Him to remain there. These questions are not meant to discourage us, but to help us recognize where Jesus is still inviting us to grow. As St. Teresa of Calcutta once said: "Each Holy Communion fills me with Jesus." The question each of us must ask is whether others can see that same Jesus in us.
