Seminar in Jammu Highlights Rights, Dignity of Migrant Workers

Jammu, Feb. 16, 2026: Emphasising that migrants are integral members of both Church and society, the Diocese of Jammu–Srinagar hosted an awareness seminar on the rights of migrant workers and access to government welfare schemes at St Mary’s Garrison Church.

Organised by the diocesan Migrant Commission, the programme brought together migrant workers from various parishes along with priests and religious sisters, creating a platform for education, dialogue, and support.

In his inaugural address, Bishop Ivan Pereira underscored the Church’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity and rights of migrants. He said migrants are not strangers but brothers and sisters whose struggles must be heard and addressed, encouraging participants to remain united and hopeful.

An awareness session led by Sr Rani Punnasseril provided an overview of the constitutional protections available to migrant workers. She explained key legal safeguards, warned against illegal recruitment and human trafficking, and highlighted awareness on minimum wages and recent labour regulations. She also urged migrants to remain connected with local parishes and register on the Catholic Connect app of the bishops’ conference to access verified information and timely assistance.

Sr Anushia Fernandes presented various Central and State government welfare schemes available to migrant workers. Participants received a government schemes booklet prepared by the CCBI Commission for Migrants to help them understand and access benefits.

Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the seminar enhanced their awareness of legal rights and social entitlements. The programme was coordinated by Fr Santhosh Athickal, Secretary of the diocesan Migrant Commission, who oversaw its organisation and outreach.

Organisers said the initiative reflects the diocese’s continuing efforts to promote dignity, awareness, and empowerment among migrant communities.
