Patna, April 3, 2026 — In a concerted effort to strengthen Christian family life, the Archdiocese of Patna conducted a four-day Pre-Marriage Preparation Course at Navjyoti Niketan (NJN) from March 25 to 28, offering holistic formation to young people preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony.
A total of 38 participants, including nine couples and several individuals whose partners reside in other dioceses or distant locations, took part in the programme. Designed to address the spiritual, emotional, and practical dimensions of married life, the course emphasised marriage as a vocation and a call to become a “living witness” of faith.
The programme was led by Dr Fr Anthony Samy, Director of NJN, who, along with Mrs Anupama Raymond, introduced participants to the theological and biblical foundations of Christian marriage. They highlighted the unity and interdependence within the marital bond, noting that the actions of one spouse profoundly affect the other.
Sessions throughout the course brought together clergy, religious, and lay experts who shared both doctrinal insights and lived experiences. Fr James Rosario reflected on the role of the sacraments in a pluralistic society, while Mr Raymond Osta and Mrs Raymond underscored the importance of mutual commitment in fostering true companionship.
A key focus of the formation was the understanding of marriage as a covenant rather than a contract. Fr Jeya Kumar described this covenant as a lifelong promise of mutual self-giving. Complementing this, Sr Blessy (CHF) led sessions on communication and emotional intimacy, and Fr Gregory Gomes, SJ, guided participants through approaches to conflict resolution and the practice of forgiveness.
The course also incorporated symbolic reflections and experiential learning. Through the “Violinist’s Lesson,” participants were encouraged to adapt creatively to life’s challenges. They also joined the wider diocesan community in the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral, presided over by Archbishop Sebastian Kallupura, deepening their sense of ecclesial belonging.
Further sessions explored the integration of faith and daily living. Fr Satya Prakash reflected on the teachings of Amoris Laetitia, emphasising love, accompaniment, and fruitfulness in family life. Medical professionals from Kurji Holy Family Hospital, including Mrs Anisha Kujur and Ms Kavita, addressed reproductive health and preventive care, highlighting the importance of physical well-being in marriage.
Testimonies from married couples added a practical dimension to the formation. Mr Sunil and Mrs Gracy Tudu shared insights on navigating disagreements, while reflections such as the “Red Sea Perspective” encouraged perseverance through trials.
On the final day, attention turned to the responsibilities of building the “domestic church.” Fr Dharam K spoke on Canon Law and financial stewardship, while members of Missionary Families for Christ emphasised the importance of grounding family life in the Word of God. Drawing from Ephesians 4:26, participants were reminded that many marital breakdowns stem not from material lack but from a failure of hearts to remain united.
The programme concluded with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, during which Fr James George, Vicar General, described marriage as the cornerstone of the domestic church and urged participants to centre their lives on prayer. The certificates awarded, he noted, symbolised not merely completion of a course but a mission to build families rooted in faith, forgiveness, and the enduring “joy of love.”
Participants departed with a renewed commitment to nurturing communication, emotional intimacy, and spiritual discipline as they prepare to embark on their vocation of married life.
