Pope Leo XIV outlines three principles for Christian mission at Chrism Mass

Vatican City, April 2, 2026: In his first Chrism Mass as Bishop of Rome, Pope Leo XIV set out three key principles for Christian mission—detachment, encounter, and embracing rejection—calling on the faithful to renew their commitment to service, humility, and hope.

Addressing bishops, priests, and the baptised, the Pope said Christian mission must mirror that of Jesus, rooted in obedience to the Holy Spirit and lived in communion with others. He emphasised that mission is not an individual effort but a shared calling of the Church.

Highlighting detachment, the Pope urged believers to move beyond comfort and familiarity in order to embrace new paths. He noted that leaving behind what is known allows the Gospel to take deeper root, warning against becoming confined by security or routine.

On encounter, Pope Leo XIV stressed the importance of humility and openness, particularly in engaging with diverse cultures. He said authentic mission requires dialogue, respect, and a willingness to learn, rather than imposing authority. The Church, he added, must avoid any abuse of power and instead adopt quiet, service-oriented approaches that reflect the spirit of the Incarnation.

The Pope also spoke about embracing rejection, describing it as an essential part of Christian witness. Referring to Jesus’ own experience of rejection, he said challenges and failures are not signs of defeat but opportunities for transformation and renewal. He underlined that the “cross is part of the mission”, bringing both difficulty and liberation.

Pope Leo XIV further called for solidarity with the poor, stating that mission must prioritise those on the margins. He warned that without detachment, there can be no authentic liberation, and without encounter, no meaningful proclamation of the Gospel.

Encouraging the faithful to overcome fear and discouragement, the Pope said Christian witness must bring hope even in difficult circumstances. He urged believers to trust in God’s grace and remain steadfast in their mission, despite setbacks or uncertainties.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo XIV invited the Church to renew its commitment to unity and peace, affirming that mission is a shared journey of faith. He called on all Christians to become witnesses of hope, spreading the message of Christ in a world often marked by division and suffering.
