Mangalore, February 11, 2025 – The Sandesha Awards 2025, celebrating outstanding contributions in literature, journalism, arts, education, music, media, and social service, took place at the Sandesha Institute Grounds in Mangalore on February 10. The prestigious event was presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao, Bishop of Shivamogga, with renowned filmmaker Shri Dr. T. S. Nagabharana as the Chief Guest.
Art’s Transformative Power Highlighted
Addressing the audience, Shri Dr. T. S. Nagabharana underscored the profound role of art and culture in shaping society. “Where culture is strong, society remains healthy, and Sandesha has been working towards this for nearly 34 years,” he noted. He emphasised that artists possess the unique ability to illuminate the darker corners of the human mind. Praising the awardees, he described them as the “cream of society” and commended their humility. “All of them are capable of awarding others, yet they stand here to receive this honour, showcasing the greatness of the Sandesha Awards,” he remarked.
Bishop Serrao Commends Sandesha’s Mission
In his presidential address, Bishop Francis Serrao lauded Sandesha’s 35-year-long commitment to fostering universal values. He highlighted the foundation’s role in promoting selfless love, spiritual depth, artistic beauty, social sensitivity, human dignity, freedom of conscience, respect for diversity, and religious harmony—values that align with India’s constitutional ethos.
Drawing a historical comparison, Bishop Serrao reflected on Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision of modern India, where dams and factories were termed the “temples of modern India.” He likened Sandesha’s contribution to cultural enrichment, stating, “Sandesha too is a temple—one that manifests spiritual and divine values through artistic and literary endeavours, as well as philanthropic service to society.”
He further emphasised the power of art, literature, music, drama, cinema, folklore, journalism, and education in shaping a just and harmonious society. “Art fosters an intrinsic unity, inspiring greater solidarity among people,” he said. Expressing admiration for the awardees, he described them as a “glittering galaxy” of individuals who have significantly contributed to their respective fields.
