Research Paper at Sadbhav Sammelan Highlights Lenten Tiatrs’ Role in Faith and Moral Renewal

Pilar, Goa, February 7, 2026: A research paper presented at the Sadbhav Sammelan 2026 highlighted the role of Lenten tiatrs in nurturing faith, promoting reconciliation, and reinforcing moral values in Goan society.

The paper, titled “Contemporary Lenten Tiatrs as Catalysts for Faith, Conflict Resolution and Moral Rectitude,” was presented by Jude Fernandes, Assistant Professor at Don Bosco College, Panaji, during the international interfaith conference held at Pilar on the theme “Together for Peace: Faith in Action.”

Fernandes described Lenten tiatrs as a spiritually driven form of Konkani Catholic theatre that goes beyond entertainment to offer moral instruction, reconciliation, and social healing. He explained that, unlike festive-season productions, Lenten tiatrs adopt a reflective and didactic tone, focusing on themes such as sin, repentance, restoration of faith, and family reconciliation.

According to the presenter, common storylines portray fractured families, wayward youth, addiction, and neglect of religious values, guiding audiences through a journey from moral failure to redemption. Religious figures and self-sacrificing family members often appear as moral guides, encouraging reconciliation with God and neighbour.

The session was moderated by Dr. Agnelo Pinheiro, Professor at the Good Shepherd Institute of Theology, Rachol, and Convenor of the Apostolate of Interreligious Dialogue of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman.

Fernandes concluded that contemporary Lenten tiatrs remain a vital expression of faith in action, shaping moral conscience and fostering social harmony in Goan society.
