Vatican City, February 15, 2026: After the Angelus prayer, Pope Leo XIV expressed his spiritual closeness to the people of Madagascar, who are grappling with the aftermath of two powerful cyclones that struck the country within a short span of time. He assured the affected communities of his prayers, saying, “I pray for the victims and their families, and for all those who have suffered serious damage.”
The cyclone season in the south-west Indian Ocean has been particularly severe this year. Madagascar has declared a national emergency and appealed for international assistance following the destructive impact of cyclones Gezani and Fytia. The back-to-back storms have caused widespread devastation, displacing thousands of people and severely damaging infrastructure and livelihoods.
Cyclone Gezani made landfall on February 10 and affected an estimated 270,000 people across the island nation. National authorities have reported that at least 40 people lost their lives as a result of the storm, while thousands were forced to flee their homes. In response, the government, in collaboration with the United Nations and other humanitarian partners, has mobilised resources for search and rescue operations, evacuation efforts, emergency shelter, and food assistance for displaced families.
During his remarks, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the importance of solidarity with those suffering from natural disasters, reaffirming the Church’s concern for people facing hardship and loss. His appeal underscored the need for sustained humanitarian support as Madagascar continues to confront the consequences of the severe weather events.
The Pope also turned his attention to the upcoming Lunar New Year, noting that billions of people across East Asia and in other parts of the world are preparing to mark the celebration. He expressed the hope that “this joyful feast” would foster stronger family bonds and friendships, bring serenity to homes and societies, and encourage people to look to the future together in a spirit of peace and shared prosperity.
With Lunar New Year set to be celebrated on February 17, Pope Leo XIV extended his good wishes and affection to all those observing the festival. He concluded by invoking God’s blessing upon everyone, praying that the celebrations would inspire harmony, renewal and hope among peoples across the world.
