Pope Leo XIV Urges Charismatic Renewal to Foster Communion, Charity and Mission

Vatican City, May 30, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has encouraged members of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal to allow the Holy Spirit to guide them in promoting communion, charity and missionary outreach within the Church.

Addressing representatives of the worldwide Charismatic Renewal and leaders of CHARIS at the Vatican on Saturday, the Pope described the movement as one of the gifts through which God has blessed the Church. He also expressed his desire to strengthen ties between the Holy See and the global Charismatic Renewal community.

Reflecting on the movement’s spiritual heritage, Pope Leo highlighted five key dimensions of the Charismatic experience: baptism in the Spirit, prayer of praise, the Word of God, communion and charity.

He said a personal encounter with the Holy Spirit enables believers to experience more deeply the grace of Baptism and become witnesses to God’s love. The Pope encouraged members of the Renewal to bring hope and consolation to those experiencing loneliness and suffering.

Emphasising the importance of prayer, he noted that praise and worship—hallmarks of the Charismatic tradition—are essential aspects of Christian life. He also underscored the central role of Sacred Scripture, describing it as a source of spiritual nourishment, guidance and discernment.

Speaking about unity, Pope Leo said the Holy Spirit is the source of communion within the Church. He praised the Renewal’s commitment to fostering harmony among its various communities and promoting relationships with Christians of other denominations.

The Pope also highlighted charity as a visible fruit of life in the Spirit. Commending the many charitable initiatives associated with the Renewal, he urged members to remain attentive to the needs of the poor and vulnerable.

Concluding his address, Pope Leo called on members of the Renewal to place their gifts at the service of dioceses and parishes and to avoid self-promotion, the pursuit of power or personal prestige.

He ended by praying that the Holy Spirit would continue to be a source of light and strength for individuals and communities as they carry out their mission in the Church.
