Most people would dismiss her immediately.
Yet that is exactly what happened to Joan of Arc.
Born into a simple peasant family, Joan had no military training, political influence, or formal education.
Nevertheless, she believed God had entrusted her with a mission that seemed impossible: help save France during the darkest years of the Hundred Years' War.
Against all expectations, people listened.
And history would never be the same.
At around thirteen years of age, Joan reported receiving visions and heavenly guidance.
She believed that saints and angels instructed her to support the rightful French king and help liberate France from English domination.
These experiences convinced her that her mission came directly from God.
Despite widespread scepticism, her determination never wavered.
She travelled across dangerous territory to present her case to the future King Charles VII.
What happened next shocked the kingdom.
After meeting Charles, she gained support from military leaders and accompanied French forces into battle.
Her presence transformed morale.
In 1429, she played a crucial role in the lifting of the Siege of Orléans, one of the most significant turning points in the war.
French victories soon followed.
Although she did not command armies in the modern sense, her courage and leadership inspired soldiers who had nearly lost hope.
Many began to see her as a sign that God had not abandoned France.
Joan's success made her powerful enemies.
Captured in 1430, she was handed over to opponents who placed her on trial for heresy.
The proceedings were heavily political and designed to discredit her mission.
After months of interrogation, she was condemned and burned at the stake in Rouen on May 30, 1431.
She was only about nineteen years old.
Years later, a new Church investigation overturned the verdict, declaring the original trial unjust.
Joan's reputation continued to grow long after her execution.
She became a symbol of:

In 1920, the Church officially canonised her, recognising the holiness that many had seen centuries earlier.
