Vatican City, 17 October 2026 — Pope Leo XIV will be discharged from Gemelli Hospital on Saturday afternoon after doctors confirmed that his clinical condition allows him to leave following surgery on his right lung.
The Holy See Press Office announced the decision on Saturday morning after the Pope underwent blood tests and a chest X-ray. His doctors, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, confirmed that the results supported his discharge.
The Pope will return to the Vatican in the early afternoon and lead the Angelus prayer on Sunday from the window of the papal apartment, according to the Holy See Press Office.
Before leaving the hospital, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Mass in a room set aside for that purpose on the hospital’s 10th floor.
