CMHM India Welcomes Vatican Push to Integrate Mental Health Care with Pastoral Support

New Delhi, October 17, 2026 : CMHM India has welcomed a new Vatican document advocating an integrated approach to mental health care and pastoral support in humanitarian crises, calling it a significant step towards strengthening community-based mental health ministry in India.

Titled Mental Health and Pastoral Accompaniment in Humanitarian Contexts, the document, issued by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, highlights the psychological, emotional, social and spiritual needs of people affected by conflict, disasters and other forms of suffering.

CMHM India said the initiative offers valuable guidance to Church leaders, pastoral workers, religious congregations, community leaders and mental health professionals working with vulnerable communities.

The organisation expressed hope that the document would help raise awareness, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and foster closer collaboration between mental health professionals and pastoral caregivers. It also underscored the importance of strengthening community-based support systems to ensure more accessible and compassionate care.

CMHM India said the initiative could advance a holistic and inclusive approach to mental health ministry, rooted in human dignity, solidarity and hope.
