Pope Leo XIV: Allow the Eucharistic Mystery to Transform Our Lives

Vatican City, June 24, 2026: Pope Leo XIV encouraged the faithful to draw strength from the Eucharist and allow themselves to be transformed by the mystery they celebrate, during his Wednesday General Audience at St. Peter’s Square.

Continuing his catechesis series on the Second Vatican Council and its 1963 Dogmatic Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Holy Father reflected on the significance of the Eucharist as the centre of Christian life.

Let us draw with faith from this source of divine life and allow ourselves to be transformed by the mystery we celebrate,” Pope Leo XIV said.

Reflecting on the Constitution’s teaching, the Pope described the Eucharist as a “sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity,” and a Paschal banquet where Christ is received, the soul is filled with grace, and the promise of future glory is given.

The Holy Father highlighted that the faithful are not called to remain passive spectators during Mass but are invited to actively participate by offering themselves in union with Jesus Christ.

He explained that through the Eucharist, Christians listen to the Word of God and receive nourishment at the Lord’s table, where Christ offers Himself to the Father. The Eucharist, he noted, becomes the spiritual sacrifice of Christians, strengthening their union with God and with one another.

By participating in it, they learn to offer themselves and, day by day, to be consumed, through Christ, in unity with God and among themselves,” the Pope said.

Referring to Sacrosanctum Concilium, Pope Leo XIV also emphasised that the Liturgy of the Word and the Eucharistic Liturgy are deeply connected, forming “one single act of worship.

He added that the Eucharist teaches believers to embrace the way of life of Jesus, marked by the generous gift of oneself.

“This gift introduces us into the dynamic of unity, which offers a powerful antidote to the forces of division that undermine our world, our communities, our families, and our hearts,” he said.

The Pope concluded by praying that all Christians may continue to seek nourishment from the Eucharist, the source of divine life, and allow themselves to be transformed through the sacred mystery they celebrate.
