Yangon, June 24, 2026: A Catholic religious sister detained by Myanmar’s military authorities while reportedly purchasing medicines for poor hospital patients is scheduled to appear before a military tribunal on June 24, prompting widespread concern and prayerful solidarity among religious communities.
Sr. Benedetta Nya Moe has been held in military custody for the past two weeks after undertaking what fellow religious described as a mission to obtain essential medicines for impoverished patients. Her detention has drawn appeals from Catholic congregations and Church communities across Myanmar and beyond.
In a message circulated among religious communities, the Provincial Superior and Provincial Delegate called on Sisters and faithful to pray for Sr. Benedetta’s protection, strength and speedy release as she faces tribunal proceedings.
The communication noted that the nun would be required to appear alone before the military tribunal, with no companions permitted to attend the hearing. It further stated that legal representation would not be allowed during the proceedings.
“In these difficult and uncertain days, we humbly ask you to continue accompanying Sr. Benedetta Nya Moe with your prayers,” the message said, invoking the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit as she confronts the challenges ahead.
A separate appeal issued by the Sisters of Maria Bambina urged continued prayers for the people of Myanmar, the Catholic Church and religious communities enduring hardship amid the country’s ongoing crisis. The congregation entrusted Sr. Benedetta “to the loving care and providence of God” and called for spiritual support during her detention.
The case has intensified concerns among Church leaders and religious communities, who view Sr. Benedetta’s detention as part of the broader suffering experienced by many in Myanmar. As she prepares to face the tribunal, Catholics across different regions have expressed solidarity through prayer and appeals for justice, peace and her safe release.
