Vatican City, March 8, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has urged a renewed commitment to recognising the equal dignity of men and women, marking International Women’s Day with a strong appeal for solidarity and respect.
Addressing around 15,000 pilgrims gathered in Saint Peter’s Square for the Sunday Angelus, and many others following from home, the Pope noted that 8 March is observed worldwide as International Women’s Day. He encouraged the faithful to “renew our commitment… to recognising the equal dignity of men and women”, stressing that for Christians this imperative is rooted in the Gospel.
The Holy Father lamented that many women, from childhood onwards, continue to face discrimination and various forms of violence. “To them, in a special way, go my solidarity and my prayers,” he said.
Pope Leo also addressed the issue in the March edition of Piazza San Pietro magazine, published the same day. Responding to a reader’s question about violence against women, he called for a stronger alliance between schools and the Church to promote “a culture of respect” among young people.
International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on 8 March, recognises the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while calling for continued action to advance gender equality.
Through his Angelus message, Pope Leo underscored the Church’s commitment to defending the dignity of women and fostering a society grounded in respect, justice and solidarity.
