Pope Francis Uses Less Oxygen, Easter Presence Still Uncertain

Vatican City, 11 April , 2025– Pope Francis is showing signs of improved health, with reduced reliance on oxygen and a return to limited public activity, the Holy See confirmed today. Despite this progress, his participation in Easter celebrations remains uncertain.

The Pontiff, 88, made a surprise visit to St Peter’s Basilica in a wheelchair, where he spent time praying and greeting the faithful. According to the Vatican Press Office, he was “happy to go to the basilica and meet the people” during what was originally a short “walk” through Casa Santa Marta.

Francis has resumed private meetings from his residence, holding discussions with senior members of the Secretariat of State, including Monsignors Edgar Peña Parra, Paul Richard Gallagher, and Luciano Russo. He has also met with department heads, marking a notable step forward in his ongoing convalescence.

Clinically, the Pope’s lung condition has improved, with auscultation and blood test results remaining stable. He now spends extended periods without oxygen, using it only in residual, therapeutic doses. Physiotherapy and other treatments continue.

Despite these developments, the Vatican has delegated Cardinal Leonardo Sandri to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass on 13 April. Officials say there are “no predictions” about the Pope’s participation in any Holy Week rites, with decisions to be influenced by both his health and weather conditions.

While his appearances remain limited, the Vatican notes a renewed vitality in Pope Francis, whose brief return to the heart of the Basilica has offered a hopeful sign to the faithful.
