Nabarangpur, Odisha, April 17, 2025 - A disturbing incident of violence unfolded in Malbeda village, in Odisha's Nabarangpur district, when members of a local Christian family were brutally attacked for burying a deceased family member on their own land. The attack occurred on April 16, despite the family having sought permission and protection from local authorities in advance.
The violence erupted during the funeral of 19-year-old Sarwan Gond, a migrant worker who had died in Maharashtra. His father, Ramachandra Gond, had submitted a formal request to the local Tahasildar seeking permission to bury his son on their patta (titled) land. According to Belbati Gond, a relative of the deceased, the villagers obstructed the burial, and despite the arrival of police and the Tahasildar, no action was taken.
"After senior Christian leaders contacted the district collector, who reportedly gave verbal clearance for the burial over the phone, the burial was completed," Belbati said. "However, violence broke out afterwards, with Hindu villagers attacking the Christian families, beating, dragging, and humiliating them."
"The attackers allegedly blockaded the area, preventing the injured from being taken to the hospital," Belbati added.
Recounting the traumatic experience, she stated that the family's lives are now in the hands of the administration. She questioned the silence and inaction of the authorities, citing the constitutional right to freedom of religion.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the Christian community in Malbeda village, which has a history of hostility toward religious minorities.
