Pope Francis: A Humble Shepherd in a Grand Office

The late Pope Francis was a spiritual leader whose legacy will be forever marked by the virtues of humility and simplicity. From the time he was elected as pope in 2013, he exhibited several gestures of simplicity, setting a tone that would come to define his papacy.

Here are five remarkable instances during Pope Francis’ 13-year-long tenure when he exhibited simplicity and humility despite being the supreme head of the Roman Catholic Church:

Modest Papal Attire

Pope Francis' first appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica after his election spoke volumes. Unlike his predecessor, who made his first public appearance wearing a traditional red papal mozzetta with ermine trim and ornate red shoes, Pope Francis chose to wear a plain white cassock and simple black shoes. This deliberate choice served as a symbolic declaration that his papacy would be defined by humility and simplicity.

A Pope Who Paid His Own Bill

One of Pope Francis's earliest and most human gestures after his election was returning in person to the Casa Santa Marta—the Vatican guesthouse where cardinals stay during the papal conclave—to pay his accommodation bills. He also packed his own belongings and personally thanked the guesthouse staff. In doing so, he quietly underscored the values of responsibility, humility, and servant leadership.

Choosing the Guesthouse Over the Palace

Unlike previous popes, Pope Francis rejected the grandeur of the Apostolic Palace and resided in a modest suite at Casa Santa Marta throughout his papacy. It wasn’t just about living modestly—it was about being accessible. Surrounded by clergy, visitors, and Vatican staff, Francis preferred community over seclusion, reminding the world that the role of a pope is that of a servant, not a sovereign.

Simple Cars Over Luxury Rides

Pope Francis chose ordinary cars for most of his travels during his papacy. He travelled in a Ford Focus or a Dacia Duster during most of his trips within Vatican City. During his 2014 trip to South Korea, he travelled in a Kia Soul mini hatchback. Though concerns for personal security at times required him to use his traditional Popemobile, his preference for everyday vehicles sent a clear message: leadership should not be defined by luxury.

In 2017, he received a Lamborghini Huracán but auctioned it and donated the proceeds to charity, reinforcing his commitment to compassion, simplicity, and service over opulence.

A $55 Watch That Told More Than Just Time

For many years during his papacy, Pope Francis wore a humble Swatch “Once Again” plastic wristwatch, priced at just $55. It featured a minimalist design and reflected the late pope’s personal philosophy: function over form, humility over extravagance.

In 2022, this watch was auctioned for an astonishing $56,250, with all proceeds supporting scholarships through the Brian LaViolette Foundation, turning a modest item into a symbol of generosity and purpose.

A Legacy Beyond Titles

Pope Francis taught by example, reminding the world that greatness lies in humility. His choices—whether a watch, a car, or a place to live—were never about appearances. They were reflections of his deep commitment to simplicity and purpose.
