Pope Francis chose ordinary cars for most of his travels during his papacy. He travelled in a Ford Focus or a Dacia Duster during most of his trips within Vatican City. During his 2014 trip to South Korea, he travelled in a Kia Soul mini hatchback. Though concerns for personal security at times required him to use his traditional Popemobile, his preference for everyday vehicles sent a clear message: leadership should not be defined by luxury.

In 2017, he received a Lamborghini Huracán but auctioned it and donated the proceeds to charity, reinforcing his commitment to compassion, simplicity, and service over opulence.

A $55 Watch That Told More Than Just Time

For many years during his papacy, Pope Francis wore a humble Swatch “Once Again” plastic wristwatch, priced at just $55. It featured a minimalist design and reflected the late pope’s personal philosophy: function over form, humility over extravagance.

In 2022, this watch was auctioned for an astonishing $56,250, with all proceeds supporting scholarships through the Brian LaViolette Foundation, turning a modest item into a symbol of generosity and purpose.
