Vatican City, August 24, 2025: Following the Sunday Angelus, Pope Leo turned his thoughts to Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province and to Ukraine, urging the faithful to pray and stand in solidarity with people wounded by violence and war.
Standing with Mozambique
The Pope expressed deep concern for the people of Cabo Delgado, who have endured years of insecurity caused by extremist violence. Since 2017, attacks in the northern province have claimed thousands of lives and forced more than a million people to flee their homes, seeking safety elsewhere in the country.
“I express my closeness to the people of Cabo Delgado, who have become victims of an insecure and violent situation that continues to bring death and displacement,” Pope Leo said. He urged the faithful not to forget “these brothers and sisters of ours” and voiced hope that Mozambique’s leaders would succeed in restoring security and peace.
Prayer for Ukraine
Pope Leo also highlighted the day of prayer and fasting observed on Friday, 22 August, for all those suffering the scourge of war. Marking the anniversary of Ukraine's independence, he drew attention to the initiative World Prayer for Ukraine, a spiritual appeal uniting Christians and people of goodwill worldwide in entrusting the nation to the Lord.
“Today,” the Pope concluded, “we join our Ukrainian brothers and sisters who, through the spiritual initiative World Prayer for Ukraine, are asking the Lord to grant peace to their tormented country.”
