The Nativity of Mary is one of the most ancient celebrations dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. According to Vatican sources, the feast is traditionally connected with the dedication of a church in Jerusalem associated with Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne. It was celebrated in Rome by the eighth century under Pope Sergius I.
The names of Joachim and Anne come from ancient Christian tradition rather than the canonical Gospels, which do not provide details about Mary's birth or childhood. The tradition is associated with the second-century Protoevangelium of James.
The birth of Mary is important because of her unique role in God's plan of salvation. Through her, Jesus Christ took human flesh. At the Annunciation, Mary responded to God's call with faith and obedience, accepting the mission that would change the course of human history.

The birth of Mary reminds Christians that God's greatest works can begin quietly. Her life teaches believers to welcome God's will with trust, serve others with love and remain faithful during difficult moments.
As Catholics celebrate Mary's birth, the feast ultimately points beyond Mary to Jesus Christ, whose coming into the world is at the heart of God's plan of salvation.
