Christian Burial Disrupted in Bengal, Raising Concerns over Funeral Rights

PURBA BARDHAMAN, September 7, 2026: A Christian burial at St. Claret Church, Sahanagar, in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district, was disrupted on August 14 after a group objected to the burial and demanded documents relating to the burial ground, according to Fr. Samuel Hembrom.

The deceased woman’s body had already been lowered into the grave when the group raised the objection, Fr. Hembrom said. The burial could not continue, and the body was eventually taken to another cemetery in Bardhaman town.

Fr. Hembrom also alleged that mourners were assaulted. He said complaints were emailed to the Superintendent of Police and the Block Development Officer.

Police presented a different account regarding some details. Purba Bardhaman Superintendent of Police Pushpa said locals objected because the deceased woman was not from the area.

Regarding the alleged assault, Pushpa said she did not think an assault had occurred but would check with the local police station.

The burial disruption is reported, while the allegation of assault remains disputed.

No grieving family should face intimidation or humiliation while laying a loved one to rest. Religious freedom and human dignity must be protected.
