Mysore Diocese Strengthens Safeguarding in Catholic Schools

Mysuru, September 13, 2026: The Diocese of Mysore has reaffirmed its commitment to child protection by organising an orientation and training programme on safeguarding in the educational apostolate for 135 principals, headmasters, headmistresses and representatives of educational institutions run by the Mysore Diocesan Educational Society (MDES) and Religious Congregations.

Held at the Catholic Centre, Mysuru, the programme focused on strengthening the responsibility of the entire educational community to ensure the safety, dignity and well-being of children.

Fr. Francis Assissi Almeida, Secretary of the Karnataka Regional Commission for Education (KRCE), served as the resource person. He stressed that safeguarding is a shared responsibility involving school management, leaders, teachers, non-teaching staff and others involved in the education of children.

Fr. Almeida explained key provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the appropriate response to safeguarding concerns. He also addressed the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) framework, professional boundaries between teachers and students, and responsible digital communication.

He urged schools to adopt a preventive approach to safeguarding through clear policies, regular staff orientation, effective reporting mechanisms and an environment in which children can raise concerns without fear.

Bishop urges educators to shape lives

Bishop Francis Serrao, SJ, of Mysore presided over the programme and delivered the main reflection, urging educators to look beyond academic results and administrative responsibilities to recognise the lives entrusted to their care.

“How are we shaping the future of society through our schools?” he asked, emphasising that education must form persons, build character, nurture values and prepare young people to become responsible members of society.

The Bishop highlighted the lasting influence teachers have through their words, attitudes, encouragement, patience and personal example. He called on educators to build children’s confidence, strengthen their character and help them recognise their dignity and potential.

He urged schools to become “like a family”, where children experience safety, belonging, acceptance, care, dignity and love. He also stressed the importance of collaboration among parents, teachers, school authorities and Religious Congregations in promoting the integral development and protection of children.

Fr. Edward William Saldanha, MDES and Educational Secretary of the Diocese of Mysore, welcomed the Bishop, resource person and participants. Fr. Arul Selva Kumar, Coordinator of Diocesan Commissions, coordinated the programme.

The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to making Catholic educational institutions safe, caring and child-friendly communities where children can learn without fear, grow in confidence and develop their God-given gifts.

The gathering underscored the Church’s understanding of schools not merely as places of academic instruction, but as communities where human lives are formed and the future of society is shaped.
