Mother Teresa’s Legacy of Peace and Service Honoured in Varanasi

VARANASI, September 5, 2026: A peace ceremony was held at GPO Square in the Cantonment area of Varanasi on September 4 to commemorate the death anniversary of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta and honour her legacy of compassion, service and peace.

Organised by the Diocese of Varanasi in front of Mother Teresa’s memorial statue, the ceremony brought together Church leaders, civil officials, educators and students to remember her lifelong service to the poor and marginalised.

Bishop Eugene Joseph of Varanasi said Mother Teresa’s commitment to serving humanity continues to inspire people across generations. By making the service of the needy and underprivileged the purpose of her life, she gave the world a message centred on humanity, love and peace, he said.

Professor Ram Sudhar Singh recalled Mother Teresa’s experiences of the devastation caused by war and famine, particularly the Bengal famine in the years preceding the Second World War. Witnessing widespread suffering, poverty, illness and disability strengthened her resolve to dedicate her life to those in need, he said.

Singh also recalled Mother Teresa’s conviction that prayer finds its deepest expression in love and that love is expressed through service. Her care for people suffering from leprosy and other illnesses, he said, reflected her belief that serving those in need was a way of serving Jesus Christ. She also believed that a life not lived for others had little meaning.

The ceremony sought to promote mutual harmony, peace and a spirit of service in society, drawing inspiration from Mother Teresa’s life and mission.

Vishal Saraswat, CEO of the Cantonment; Raj Kumar, member of the Cantonment Board; Parmanand of the Indian Posts and Telegraph Department; priests and religious sisters; and the principal, teachers and students of St Mary’s School attended the programme.

Schoolchildren paid tribute to Mother Teresa with a song. St Mary’s School conducted the programme, while Fr. Thomas delivered the vote of thanks.
