Lay Evangelizers Drive Grassroots Mission Across Sivagangai Diocese

Sivagangai, March 24, 2026: A vibrant movement of lay-led evangelization is quietly reshaping parish life and faith communities across the Diocese of Sivagangai, where more than 1,000 trained lay evangelizers are actively bringing the Gospel to homes, villages, and even neighboring dioceses.

Inspired by Christ’s mandate to “go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel,” the Lay Evangelizers Movement—locally known as Narcheithi Paniyalarkal—has emerged as a dynamic expression of missionary discipleship rooted in the laity. What began as small, prayer-centered gatherings in the rural Ramnad region in the late 1970s has since grown into a well-structured diocesan initiative.

With the guidance of the Church and the support of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the movement steadily developed into an organized force for evangelization. Today, the diocese counts 1,047 trained lay evangelizers, making it a unique model in Tamil Nadu for structured lay missionary engagement.

The movement functions under the diocesan Commission for Evangelization and is coordinated through Arulchandru Nilayam, based in Ulaganathapuram, Paramakudi. The centre serves as a hub for formation, planning, and the development of pastoral resources.

Guided by the motto “To become and to make disciples of Christ,” members undergo a comprehensive 15-month formation programme. This training integrates Scripture, prayer, sacraments, Church teaching, and missionary outreach, equipping participants for both personal spiritual growth and active pastoral ministry.

The evangelizers’ work spans a wide range of grassroots activities, including proclaiming the Word of God, conducting family visits, organizing retreats and prayer meetings, assisting in catechetical formation, and strengthening Basic Christian Communities (Anbiyams). Their outreach also extends to those distanced from the Church, while addressing pressing social concerns such as superstition, caste discrimination, and injustice.

During the Lenten season, their missionary zeal becomes especially visible, as lay evangelizers visit every parish in the diocese to engage with families. This year, their mission has expanded beyond diocesan boundaries, reaching neighboring regions and marking a new phase of growth.

A defining feature of the movement is its lay-led and self-sustaining structure. Operating through coordinators and animators rather than hierarchical dependence, it fosters shared responsibility and strong ownership among members, many of whom generously volunteer their time and resources.

Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, the spirituality of the lay evangelizers is expressed through simplicity, prayer, sacrifice, and service. Their witness continues to inspire renewal within families and parish communities.

As a compelling model of the Church’s call to New Evangelization, the Lay Evangelizers Movement in Sivagangai stands out for its enduring impact and expanding reach, responding with conviction and joy to the mission entrusted by Christ.
