Kerala Latin Catholic Council Urges Chief Minister to Convene Meeting on Koshy Commission Report

Kochi, Feb 15, 2026: The Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council has urged Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to convene an urgent meeting to discuss the implementation of the J. B. Koshy Commission Report and to clarify the government’s position on its recommendations.

In a press statement issued in Kochi, the Council called for the immediate publication of the Commission’s report and demanded structured consultations with representatives of the affected communities. It noted that despite earlier assurances by the Chief Minister to hold discussions with Christian organisation leaders, no such meeting has taken place.

The Council pointed out that three years have passed since the Commission, constituted to examine the issues faced by Christians in the state—particularly Dalit Christians, fisherfolk and hill farmers—submitted its report to the government. According to the Council, the Commission proposed 502 recommendations addressing the concerns of Latin Catholics and other Christian communities in Kerala.

While Minority Affairs Minister V. Abdurahiman has informed the Legislative Assembly that 202 recommendations have been implemented, the Council demanded that the government specify which measures have been acted upon. It also expressed concern over what it described as contradictory statements from government representatives regarding the status of implementation.

Council leaders said even the Commission chairman has affirmed that the report contains concrete proposals capable of addressing longstanding social and economic concerns of Latin Catholics and other Christian communities in the state.

The press conference and leadership meeting were held in Ernakulam under the chairmanship of Varghese Chakkalakkal, with several Church and lay leaders participating.

During the meeting, the Council also finalised plans for its Silver Jubilee celebrations, scheduled to begin on May 17, 2026, and conclude on May 23, 2027, with a Latin Catholic Grand Convention. As part of the jubilee initiatives, the Council announced plans to prepare a ten-year development roadmap aimed at the holistic advancement of the Latin Catholic community in Kerala.
