Karwar Diocese Hosts Political Awareness Programme to Promote Responsible Civic Engagement

Karwar, Karnataka, March 3, 2026: In a concerted effort to foster informed and value-based civic participation, the Commissions of the Diocese of Karwar organised a Political Awareness Programme at the KDDC Building, Karwar, on February 28, bringing together 54 representatives from the deaneries of Kajubag, Kone, Kumta, Honnavar and Bhatkal.

The initiative was jointly coordinated by the Karwar Diocesan Development Council (KDDC) along with the Laity, Youth, Women’s, Social Communication and Ecumenism Commissions. The gathering aimed to equip participants with greater political understanding and encourage responsible engagement in the democratic process.

The programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolising enlightenment and guidance. Fr. Edwin D’Souza, Director of the Ecumenism Commission, led the opening prayer, while Fr. Silvan Rodrigues, Director of the Youth Commission, welcomed the participants.

In his introductory address, Fr. Gabriel Lopes, Secretary of KDES, underscored the importance of unity within the community and cautioned against divisions. He called on all present to work collaboratively for the common good, emphasising harmony and collective responsibility.

Fr. Steven D’Souza, Director of KDDC, introduced the resource person and later proposed the vote of thanks. The chief guest, Fr. Lancy Rodrigues, Director of the Laity Commission, urged participants to be the “salt of the earth,” encouraging them to remain vigilant, politically aware and faithful to their Christian responsibilities in public life.

The keynote session was delivered by Mrs. Veronica Carnelio, who offered an in-depth presentation on the Panchayat Raj system. Highlighting the importance of value-based leadership in both society and the Church, she encouraged aspiring candidates not to be discouraged by setbacks but to remain persistent in contesting elections. Active participation in democratic processes, she noted, is essential for meaningful community service.

Mrs. Carnelio also introduced the “One Page, One Family” concept, urging candidates to personally reach out to each household with a concise presentation of their vision and priorities. She further stressed the need to maintain healthy interreligious relationships, promoting dialogue, harmony and mutual respect within society.

Among those present were Fr. Ireneo Dias, Dean of Kajubag, and Fr. Stewart Fernandes, Director of Social Communication. The programme concluded with an interactive session during which participants engaged the resource person with questions and clarifications. The gathering ended with a renewed sense of commitment among the deanery representatives to contribute responsibly and ethically to public life.
