Indian Catechetical Association Explores Social Media and AI in Catechesis at Bhopal Meet

Bhopal, February 15, 2026 — The Indian Catechetical Association convened its 29th General Body Meeting at Samanvaya Theology Centre from 11 to 13 February, examining the evolving role of social media and artificial intelligence in catechesis.

The three-day gathering, centred on the theme “Catechesis in the Age of Social Media and AI,” brought together 61 participants, including priests, religious, lay faithful and seminarians, for research presentations, keynote reflections and practical engagement with emerging technologies.

A. A. S. Durairaj presided over the Eucharistic celebration and joined one of the plenary sessions, encouraging delegates in their theological reflection and pastoral discernment.

The programme featured seven research papers and two keynote addresses exploring both the opportunities and challenges posed by digital culture. Limson CMI of Christ University traced the development and societal impact of social media and artificial intelligence, highlighting their growing influence on communication and faith formation. Gilbert Choondal presented the Magisterial perspective on digital engagement, describing catechesis as increasingly shaped by an “onlife” reality that integrates online and offline experiences.

Subsequent presentations addressed ethical concerns related to artificial intelligence and social media, and called for the development of catechetical approaches that thoughtfully respond to digital realities. A special study session examined the Adolescence series, prompting critical discussion on Gen Z culture and its formation within a media-saturated environment.

The deliberations included hands-on exposure to AI tools and culminated in policy proposals aimed at guiding catechists and parents in digital engagement. A final statement synthesising the assembly’s reflections was discussed and formally adopted on the concluding day. Participants also undertook a brief city tour.

Delegates expressed appreciation to Lawrence CMI and the CMI community for their hospitality at the Samanvaya campus.

Elections held during the meeting saw Fr. Gilbert Choondal elected President, George Chinnappan as Secretary and Kiran Gohil as Treasurer. The association also announced that the next General Body Meeting will be held in Mizoram from 17 to 19 February 2027 on the theme “Catechesis for Missionary Discipleship,” with David Lalthanmawia serving as local coordinator.

This continues your recent series of Church-focused reports across India, keeping the tone crisp and factual while highlighting pastoral trends shaping contemporary ministry.
