NEW DELHI, October 26, 2026: India has condemned a deadly shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan that reportedly killed eight people and injured nearly 40 others, expressing solidarity with the Jordanian government and people.
In a statement issued on October 24, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the October 23 attack at Saint George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Hamoud, in Jordan’s Karak governorate, and offered condolences to the families of those killed.
“India unequivocally condemns the heinous attack at a Church in Karak, Jordan,” the ministry said, wishing those injured a speedy recovery.
“India stands firmly with the Government and the friendly people of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in this difficult hour,” the statement added, reaffirming New Delhi’s opposition to terrorism in all its forms.
According to reports, three gunmen opened fire at the church while hundreds of people were attending a funeral. The shooting, about 180 kilometres south of Amman, initially left seven people dead before the reported toll rose to eight.
Jordanian authorities described the incident as a terrorist attack and launched efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible. No group had claimed responsibility, and investigations were continuing into the attackers’ identities and possible affiliations.
King Abdullah II visited Karak following the shooting and vowed a firm response against those responsible. He also stressed that attempts to undermine national unity through violence would fail.
The attack drew condemnation from several countries in the region, including Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Oman, while Iraq expressed solidarity with Jordan in its fight against terrorism.
The shooting has raised concerns over the safety of places of worship and the security of communities gathering for religious observances. Christians have long been part of Jordan’s religious and cultural life.
India’s statement underscored its support for Jordan and its opposition to attacks targeting civilians. The ministry called for solidarity with the victims and their families as Jordan continued its investigation.
