CHARIS India Organises First National Conference for Spiritual Advisors

PANVEL, October 26, 2026: Spiritual Advisors of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) in India have been called to deepen their personal holiness, strengthen pastoral leadership and guide the movement’s mission with wisdom and openness to the Holy Spirit.

The call came during the first national conference of Spiritual Advisors, organised by the CHARIS National Service of Communion (CNSC) at the Animation and Renewal Centre (ARC), Panvel, on October 15 and 16. Held under the theme “Shepherds After God’s Own Heart”, the conference brought together priests serving dioceses, prayer groups and the wider Charismatic Renewal movement.

The sessions explored the role of Spiritual Advisors, the vision and mission of CHARIS, the exercise of charisms and the discernment of the Holy Spirit’s guidance for the Renewal in India. Participants also reflected on personal holiness and their pastoral responsibilities.

Archbishop Francis Kalist highlighted the different dimensions of a Spiritual Advisor’s ministry, describing the role as that of a moderator, animator, facilitator and director. He emphasised the importance of accompanying the lay faithful and guiding them in their spiritual journey.

Chevalier Cyril John presented the vision and mission of CHARIS, stressing that holiness is central to Christian life and service within the Renewal.

Sr Elsis Matthew addressed the role of charisms, particularly healing and deliverance, in pastoral ministry. She encouraged priests to exercise these gifts through prayer and discernment, especially in responding to influences that cause division within parishes and Church communities.

An interactive discussion enabled participants to assess the Charismatic Renewal’s contribution to the Church and share the challenges they encounter in their ministry.

The conference opened with an inaugural session, followed by a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Archbishop John Rodrigues of the Archdiocese of Bombay. The gathering concluded with prayer for Baptism in the Holy Spirit and a vote of thanks.

Looking ahead, CHARIS India has dedicated 2027 to prayer groups, aiming to renew their spiritual life and missionary commitment as the Catholic Charismatic Renewal prepares to mark its 60th anniversary. Spiritual Advisors are expected to support this initiative through pastoral accompaniment, formation and encouragement of evangelisation at the parish level.

The conference marked a step towards strengthening the spiritual and pastoral leadership of the Renewal in India, with participants called to nurture vibrant communities, encourage the responsible exercise of charisms and foster a Spirit-led Church.
