ICYM Udupi Deanery Reaches Out to the Elderly, Bridging Generations with Compassion

Udupi, 9 April 2025: Driven by a spirit of selfless service, the youth of ICYM Udupi Deanery visited Karunya Ashrayadhama, an old age home for the abandoned and underprivileged in Katpady, on 6 April 2025. The initiative, rooted in compassion and solidarity, aimed to bring joy and companionship to senior citizens often left in the margins of society.

Encouraged by the charitable spirit of KRYC, the Udupi Deanery Council dedicated their Sunday afternoon to bringing joy and companionship to a group often overlooked—senior citizens. The initiative brought together 11 youth volunteers and around 15 residents in a heartfelt exchange of stories, laughter, and empathy.

The day began at Holy Cross Church, Katpady, where the youth gathered with Fr. Ronson D’Souza, Youth Director of Udupi Deanery. After a prayer, they set out to the home with a simple goal: to make someone feel seen, heard, and loved.

Starting with action songs and icebreaker games, the volunteers ensured every resident felt included and appreciated. Introductions led to personal conversations, where the youth listened and learned about the life experiences of the elderly residents. It was a shared moment of reflection, connection, and warmth.

A particularly touching moment unfolded during lunch, when the residents expressed, “Having this lunch with you today made us truly happy”—a sentiment that resonated deeply with the young visitors.

One of the highlights was a finger painting activity, symbolising the unity of different lives and the value of every age. Each fingerprint told a story, woven together to express the beauty of mutual care and connection.

The youth donated essential groceries to the home and distributed individual gift hampers to the residents, a gesture reflecting the day’s spirit of service.

More than an outreach, the visit echoed the Scripture, “Freely you have received; freely give” (Matthew 10:8). It was a meaningful encounter, reminding all involved that compassion and presence can transform hearts and build a more caring world.
