Mangaluru, March 17, 2026: In an effort to empower young people with effective communication and leadership skills, the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) of the Mangalore Diocese, in collaboration with Mandd Sobhann, organised a residential Master of Ceremonies (MC) training workshop that brought together 58 participants from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasaragod.
The workshop, aimed at forming skilled and confident anchors for community and Church events, opened with a symbolic inauguration led by Fr. Ashwin Lohith Cardoza. Marking the occasion, he opened a microphone as a sign of unlocking hidden talents among the youth. A creative display of scattered pearls further illustrated the call to recognise and share individual gifts through effective anchoring.
Addressing the participants, Fr. Cardoza underscored that the role of a Master of Ceremonies goes beyond stage presence. “An MC serves as a bridge between the programme and the audience, ensuring coherence and flow,” he said, urging the youth to cultivate confidence, clarity and adaptability.
Louis Pinto, President of Mandd Sobhann, highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent and guiding it towards constructive and community-oriented engagement. He reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to promoting cultural and personal development among youth.
The training programme blended theory with hands-on practice. Sessions led by Mahesh Nayak covered key aspects such as event management, anchoring techniques, public speaking, stage presence and personality development. Participants were also introduced to elements of Konkani culture, enriching their understanding of local traditions.
Adding further depth, Arun Raj Rodrigues conducted sessions on traditional Mangalorean wedding customs and offered insights into professional and television anchoring, broadening participants’ exposure to the field.
A highlight of the workshop was the practical component, where participants worked in groups to conceptualise and present mock events, including corporate programmes, ICYM Jubilee celebrations and public functions. Their performances were assessed with detailed feedback on scripting, delivery and pronunciation.
Participants reported noticeable growth in their confidence and communication abilities over the course of the training. Certificates were distributed by Dr. Steeven Dsouza and Rony Crasta at the conclusion of the programme.
The initiative reflects the Church’s growing emphasis on equipping youth with practical skills, enabling them to take active and responsible roles in animating community life and leading public programmes with competence and confidence.
