Historic Church in Southern Brazil Destroyed in Massive Fire

Flores da Cunha, Brazil, May 28, 2026: A devastating fire reduced the historic Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora de Lourdes to ruins, leaving the Catholic community of southern Brazil in shock and grief.

The blaze erupted on May 25 while renovation work was being carried out on the church’s roof and electrical systems. Within moments, flames spread rapidly through the wooden roof structure, sending thick smoke into the sky and triggering a major collapse inside the church.

Drone footage from the scene revealed heartbreaking images of charred interiors, shattered debris and firefighters battling through the ruins of the beloved sanctuary. Sacred statues were seen being carried out from the burning structure as stained-glass windows crumbled under the intense heat.

Thankfully, the church had been closed for renovation at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters also managed to stop the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

For generations, Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora de Lourdes stood as a spiritual and cultural landmark in Flores da Cunha. Many faithful described the tragedy as “a wound to the heart” of the community as they watched the destruction unfold.

What once stood as a symbol of faith and heritage now lies in ruins, leaving behind grief, silence and memories deeply rooted in the life of the community.

The Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Lourdes in Flores da Cunha, Brazil, is a historic stone landmark built between 1904 and 1914 by French Capuchin friars and local Italian immigrants. Renowned as one of the first English Gothic-style churches in Rio Grande do Sul, it features a majestic 55-meter-tall detached bell tower constructed from over 11,000 hand-hewn basalt blocks.

The church serves as a deeply spiritual center for the community, housing an imported Italian altar and the tomb of the Venerable Frei Salvador Pinzetta, and it remains a resilient symbol of local heritage as the community rallies to restore its structure following a major roof fire.
