Historic Breakthrough for Rabha Language as Bible, Dictionary, and Grammar Released in Goalpara

Goalpara, Assam,November 13 2025 — In a landmark cultural and linguistic milestone, the complete Holy Bible in the Rabha language, along with the second edition of the Khúrangnala (English–Rabha and Rabha–English Dictionary) and An Introduction to Róngdani Rabha (Grammar), was released at St Francis of Assisi Church, Matia Majerburi, Goalpara. The event, attended by community leaders, scholars, and representatives of Rabha organisations, marked a historic step in preserving and strengthening Rabha literature. The release brought together Rabha authors, linguists, and cultural advocates, who gathered to witness the official unveiling and recognise the decades-long effort behind these publications.

Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati, who led the release of the Rabha Bible, described it as “a sacred treasure for generations and a priceless contribution to indigenous literature.” He was joined by Bishop C. J. Jose of Tura, who noted the wider cultural importance of the three publications and their role in strengthening linguistic identity among the Rabha people.

All three works were authored by Fr U. V. Jose, SDB, a Salesian missionary, linguist, and long-standing collaborator with the Rabha community, together with co-author Bhupen Torang. Fr Jose, fluent in Rabha, has spent many years documenting and developing the language, and has previously authored several Rabha publications. The translation of the Bible was made possible through the contributions of a dedicated group of translators, including the late Jalam Hato, Abraham Bom, Jiten Rungdung, Mahim Gaynang, Soytoboti Doynang, Harish Baida, Daniel Baida, Sanjay Rungdung, Purohit Rungdung, Johney Hakasang, and Tomsawyer Tara.

Community leaders, including Tarok Barchung, President of the Goalpara Rabha Sahitya Sabha, and Purandar Rabha, Vice-President of BJP Goalpara, received the newly released dictionary and grammar, calling the day a “new dawn for Rabha literary history”. They emphasised that the survival of Rabha identity depends on written, accessible literature and praised Fr Jose’s sustained contribution, describing him as “a true friend of the Rabha people”.

Several representatives from Rabha organisations and cultural bodies, including members of the All Rabha Students’ Union and Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, highlighted the significance of the publications for linguistic preservation. Speakers urged younger generations to take responsibility for strengthening their language through active use, documentation, and community-led literacy initiatives.

The event brought together attendees from Assam and Meghalaya, including members of various villages and cultural groups. A cultural programme featuring traditional Rabha music and dance celebrated the community’s heritage, and the gathering concluded with a community meal for over 2,000 people.
