Goa’s Migrant Youth Come Together to Celebrate Faith, Culture and Community

Goa, September 1, 2026: Young people from different parts of Goa came together for Migrant Youth Day 2026, a celebration that brought together spiritual formation, cultural expression, social awareness and community interaction under the theme “Abide in Me,” the pastoral theme of the Archdiocese of Goa. The celebration was organised in collaboration with the Diocesan Youth Centre Goa (DYC Goa) of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and Arnold Seva Kendra (ASK) of SVD Goa at Holy Cross Church Hall, Verna, on August 30.

The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Fr. Anil Xalxo, OFM. In his message to the youth, Fr. Blaise Lobo, Diocesan Youth Director, encouraged them to remain close to Jesus and to “abide” in Him through prayer and spiritual activities. He also reminded them that young people are called not only to grow in faith but also to fulfil their responsibilities as responsible citizens of the nation.

Fr. Salvador Carvalho, SVD, Rector of the SVD Seminary, Raia; Fr. Blaise Lobo, Diocesan Youth Director; Fr. Caetano Mascarenhas, SVD; and Fr. Michael Pereira, SVD, Chotanagpur Youth In-charge, concelebrated the Eucharist.

A special awareness session on road safety and traffic regulations, conducted by Traffic Police Officer Girish Mardolkar from the Traffic Cell, Vasco, brought a practical dimension to the celebration. The session highlighted the importance of obeying traffic rules, exercising caution while travelling, and taking responsibility for one’s own safety and the safety of others on the road. The interactive session was well received by the participants.

“Many of the traffic rules and laws I did not know, and I came to know about them today,” said Anjali Kullu, expressing her appreciation for the session. Prakash Kullu described it as “a very informative session” through which he came to know many new things.

Games and entertainment provided further opportunities for interaction, with Fr. Michael and his team leading the youth in various activities. The activities created an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie, enabling the participants to relax, interact and build new friendships.

The celebration also featured cultural performances, with the Tribal Fashion Show emerging as one of the major attractions. Participants proudly presented traditional attire representing different tribal communities from across India, highlighting the richness and diversity of the country’s tribal heritage. The programme also featured group dance and solo singing competitions.

For the youth, the celebration offered more than entertainment. It provided an opportunity for young people from different parts of Goa to come together, share their talents, strengthen friendships and experience the joy of community. Participants expressed that the programme offered a much-needed break from their regular activities while enabling them to spend their time meaningfully with fellow young people.

The achievements of the participating groups were recognised through the prize distribution, with the Fatorpa group emerging as the overall champion and receiving the Champion Trophy. The Verna group secured second place, while the Betalbatim group received third place. Fr. Michael Pereira, SVD, in charge of the Migrant Youth Group, expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the celebration.

Migrant Youth Day 2026 brought together spiritual reflection, cultural expression, social awareness and youthful participation under the call to “Abide in Me.” The celebration highlighted the importance of remaining connected to Christ while using one’s talents, making responsible choices and growing as active and responsible members of society.
