From Goa to the international stage, windsurfer Katya Coelho’s journey is one of faith, resilience and hope

Goa, October 26, 2026: For Katya Coelho, the sea has been a classroom, the wind a teacher and every race an opportunity to discover her strength. The Goan windsurfer has overcome sporting setbacks, fierce competition and uncertainty to represent India in many global competitions including the presently concluded 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

“My Journey Hasn’t Been a Straight Line”

Her journey offers an inspiring reminder that success is not simply measured by medals, but also by the courage to continue when circumstances do not go as planned.

Raised in Goa in a Christian family, Katya discovered windsurfing at the age of 11 under the guidance of her father, Donald Coelho, a former national windsurfing champion. What began as a childhood introduction to the water gradually developed into a lifelong sporting pursuit.

Finding Courage on the Water

Windsurfing demands much more than physical strength. Athletes must balance on a moving board, control a sail and respond constantly to changing wind and water conditions. Success requires patience, discipline and the ability to remain calm amid uncertainty.

Katya's sporting achievements reflect years of commitment. She has won 21 national gold medals, earned two Asian bronze medals and secured silver at the 2022 Pattaya International Windsurfing Cup in Thailand. That victory made her the first Indian athlete to win an international medal in the iQFOiL windsurfing class.

She also became the first and only Indian female windsurfer to compete at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, helping bring greater visibility to a sport that remains relatively unfamiliar in India.

Yet her journey has not always been smooth. Her exclusion from India's final contingent for the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou was a painful setback after she had prepared for the competition. Rather than abandoning her ambitions, Katya continued training and competing, determined to earn another opportunity.

A Second Chance at the Asian Games

In 2026, that determination brought her back to the Asian Games.

Katya topped the women's iQFOiL category at the Sail India national trials before travelling to Europe to compete at the Princess Sofia Regatta in Spain and French Olympic Week. Finishing among the top five Asian competitors at these international events helped her satisfy the performance requirements for selection.

Her qualification marked a significant milestone: she became the only Indian windsurfer to qualify for the Asian Games in the iQFOiL category for a second time.

Her return to the continental stage was a testament to perseverance. It demonstrated that disappointment need not be the end of a dream; sometimes, it becomes the beginning of a stronger determination to succeed.

Faith, Family and the Grace to Persevere

Katya's journey offers an opportunity to reflect on the Christian understanding of perseverance and hope. Although her sporting achievements are the result of sustained training and personal discipline, her story also highlights the importance of family, encouragement and the strength to face uncertainty.

Her father has been central to her development, teaching her not only the fundamentals of windsurfing but also the patience required to master it. Her mother and brother have also supported her journey.

These relationships reflect a truth deeply valued in Catholic life: we rarely fulfil our calling alone. Family, community and the encouragement of others help us recognise and develop the gifts entrusted to us.

Faith does not promise an easy journey or guarantee victory in every competition. Rather, it invites us to meet challenges with courage, humility and trust while continuing to work diligently.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Katya also hopes to make windsurfing more accessible in India, particularly to young girls. Financial barriers, expensive equipment and limited training opportunities can prevent talented youngsters from pursuing the sport seriously.

Her achievements demonstrate what is possible when passion meets opportunity. By sharing her experiences and challenging assumptions about women in sport, she hopes to encourage more girls to discover their own potential.

As she reflects on the next chapter of her life, Katya's journey remains an inspiring example of resilience. From her first uncertain attempts on a windsurfing board to representing India, she has learnt to navigate both favourable winds and difficult waters.

For Katya Coelho, the greatest lesson may be that life, like windsurfing, demands courage when conditions change. With faith, determination and the support of loved ones, even an unexpected setback can become an opportunity to begin again.
