Fr. Sadanand’s Legacy Rekindled Through Award for Courageous Witness

Bhopal, April 22, 2026: A decade after his passing, the enduring legacy of Fr. Sadanand—revered as Swami Sadanand—was brought into sharp focus at a commemorative gathering in Bhopal that celebrated his life through the recognition of contemporary changemakers committed to justice, reconciliation, and peace.

Nearly 200 priests, religious, theologians, and lay faithful, alongside participants from other faith traditions, assembled at the Samanvaya Campus on April 20 to mark “A Decade of Remembrance of Swami Sadanand.” The event, centred on the theme of fostering reconciliation and harmony through interfaith dialogue, became a platform not only for reflection but for reaffirming the mission he embodied.

At the heart of the observance was the conferring of the “Peace Builders through Path Breaking Initiatives” Awards, a tribute that echoed Fr. Sadanand’s lifelong commitment to bridging divides and standing with the marginalized. Presided over by Bishop Thomas Mathew, the awards honoured individuals and organisations whose work reflects the prophetic zeal and compassionate outreach that defined the late CMI priest.

Fr. Sadanand, remembered as a “prophet of peace,” lived a remarkable vocation that transcended religious boundaries. Embracing the spiritual path of a Swami, he became a symbol of interreligious dialogue and universal fraternity. His ministry was marked by tireless efforts to mediate conflicts, uplift the oppressed, and promote nonviolence rooted in the principles of Satyagraha. Even in death, his donation of his body for medical education stood as a final act of self-giving.

Among the awardees, Sr. Sujata Jena of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts was recognised for her unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment. Her work spans legal advocacy, journalism, and grassroots action, including the rescue of bonded labourers and the fight against human trafficking. Receiving the honour, she affirmed that the recognition deepens her resolve to pursue justice with renewed courage.

Other recipients included Dr. Brijmohan Singh for his contributions to holistic health and social reform, Fr. Solomon Kadambattuparambil CMI for empowering persons with disabilities, Samanvaya Parivar for advancing interfaith harmony, and Veer Ratna Foundation for its dedicated service to war widows.

Earlier in the day, reflections on Fr. Sadanand’s life highlighted the continued relevance of his vision in a fractured world. Speakers underscored the urgency of translating his ideals of compassion, justice, and harmony into concrete action. A panel discussion on peacebuilding further explored themes such as women’s leadership, ecological responsibility, trauma healing, and interfaith collaboration—areas deeply resonant with his mission.

Personal testimonies offered moving glimpses into the transformative impact of Fr. Sadanand’s life, revealing a man whose quiet yet courageous witness touched lives across social and religious boundaries.

As the gathering concluded, participants were left with a clear conviction: while Fr. Sadanand is no longer physically present, his spirit lives on—in every act of courage for justice, every gesture of reconciliation, and every effort to build a more peaceful and compassionate world.
