Fr. Pinheiro Ordained Bishop; Cardinal Ferrão Urges Shepherding with Love

Sindhudurg, April 16, 2026 — The episcopal ordination of Bishop Agnelo Pinheiro was marked by a profound call to faithful discipleship and pastoral responsibility, as Filipe Cardinal Neri Ferrão of Goa Archdiocese reflected on the deeper meaning of episcopal vocation during his homily.

Centering his message on the theme “Let your will be done,” Cardinal Ferrão described the call to the episcopacy as a sign of God’s special love and a response to divine grace. Drawing inspiration from Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, he emphasised that true leadership in the Church is rooted in obedience to the Father’s will—an obedience lived through sacrifice and fulfilled in the Resurrection.

Highlighting the continuity of Christ’s mission in the Church, the Cardinal noted that while all the baptised share in this mission, bishops are called in a unique way as successors of the Apostles, entrusted with guiding the faithful in truth and charity.

He outlined the threefold mission of a bishop: to know his people, to nourish them spiritually, and to build communion. A bishop, he said, must walk closely with his flock, especially the poor and the marginalised, reflecting the compassionate presence of Christ.

At the same time, he underscored the bishop’s role as teacher and witness, called to proclaim the Gospel, administer the sacraments, and lead a life of integrity. Equally important is his responsibility to foster unity within the Church. “Communion is the dream of Jesus,” Cardinal Ferrão said, urging the bishop-elect to become a bridge of reconciliation and harmony.

The faithful, too, have a vital role, he added, encouraging them to support their new bishop through prayer, cooperation, and active participation in the Church’s mission.

The celebration stood as a moment of grace for the Church, affirming that the call to shepherd God’s people remains, at its heart, a call to love, serve, and walk in the will of God.
